How home ventilation systems can make your family happier
Healthy air and a healthy mind are more related than people think. It’s important for both our mental and physical health that we live in homes that are properly ventilated, to create a safe environment for our families. Here we explain how a healthy home through proper ventilation can lead to a healthier and happier family.
Meeting the basics: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
When it comes to meeting our needs, it stands to reason that meeting our most fundamental and basics needs is generally on the top of our list. Saving up to buy a first home, or thinking about what to buy for groceries to make a healthy dinner – these are basic needs that take up a lot of our headspace. This behaviour is well-expressed in Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs.’ This theory is common, and you may have heard of it before. Psychologist Abraham Maslow developed the theory, proposing that humans have a hierarchy of needs, in which our basic requirements at the bottom of the hierarchy need to be fulfilled before we can attend to the needs that are higher up.
At the bottom, we have physiological needs – food, water, warmth, and rest. Just a tier above are security and safety needs. Incidentally, these are all contributing factors of a healthy home. Without these needs met, we cannot successfully move higher up towards developing our relationships, personal goals, and happiness.
So how do we ensure that our homes provide adequate warmth, rest and safety, so our families can meet these basic needs, and work their way up on the pyramid? It may pay to check on the state of your home ventilation! Let’s dive into the best benefits of a well-ventilated home and how they can make your family happier.
Breathe easy
Unventilated homes harbour condensation, leading to the development of dangerous black mould. This is one of the worst things for you and your family to breathe in every day – it’s no wonder it causes so many harmful diseases. Unhealthy, damp homes are so often linked with respiratory infections and asthma in New Zealand, but installing a good home ventilation system can quickly reduce the risk of illness, or reduce trigger symptoms of asthma significantly.
Most people have experienced what it’s like to not be at our physical best, and it doesn’t do great things for our mental health or happiness. Doing everything you can to stay in peak health is an excellent way to stay positive and in a great frame of mind. If you struggle with respiratory issues, or have kids with asthma, a home ventilation system is something to consider.
Healthier skin
Among other harmful diseases, black mould can be a major cause of skin infections such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. The skin is our bodies’ largest organ, and if it is unhealthy, it won’t hesitate to let us know about it. Eczema and psoriasis especially flare up in winter when it is harder to escape dampness, and these conditions can be extremely uncomfortable.
If your skin imperfections aren’t going away with a regular skin care routine, and you’re noticing other effects of an unhealthy or damp home, it may be time to think about the connection between the ventilation of your home and your skin. Not to mention facial skin problems can dig deep into our self-esteem.
Stay warm and cosy
A warm home is a happy home, and it’s no secret that having a regulated body temperature is excellent for our physical and mental health. Warmth is a key basic need according to Maslow’s Hierarchy. Not only does it stop us from getting ill in winter, it also helps our brains and nervous system function better. Research shows that when our body temperatures are higher, we are much more alert, and our working memory is improved.
You may think that ventilation systems let all the warm air out of your home in winter, but that’s a common misconception. Home ventilation systems help keep your home dry, which actually makes your home easier to heat, therefore keeping it warmer (and helping you save on those dreaded electricity bills!). This is great in winter when we are less inclined to open doors and windows to let in fresh, cold air. Keep in mind ventilation systems work by pulling the warmer, drier air from the roof space down into your home and pushing out stale, moisture-laden air under doors, out through extraction vents i.e. rangehoods etc - a process known as positive pressure.
Make home ventilation a priority
